Throughout the Years: History of The Wells Hotel

When the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine opened in early 1933, Major E.J. Gook surveyed the townsite of Wells, BC. The first two lots, located at the corner of Pooley Street and Sanders Avenue, were sold to entrepreneur Paddy Macdonell, who began building the Wells Hotel on the site. The Wells Hotel, a charming heritage country inn, is the largest and most imposing building on Pooley Street and serves as the centrepiece of the main street. It’s believed to be the first building in the Cariboo region to be constructed from plans drawn by qualified architects. As one of the historic hotels in BC, we offer a unique experience for those seeking historic stays. With pet-friendly accommodations, a renowned BC craft beer selection, and a single malt Scotch collection, we provide a welcoming atmosphere for all guests. Whether you’re visiting Cariboo travel destinations, Bowron Lake adventures, or a day shredding on the mountains of Troll, The Wells Hotel is your perfect choice for a memorable stay.  Don’t forget to enjoy live music at our Wells BC pub and restaurant, one of the premier live music venues in BC.

Step Back In Time: The Wells’ Grand Old Hotel

The Wells Hotel features an English Tudor exterior with three symmetrical false gables and a half-timbered effect, achieved using dark brown slats and California stucco. Inside, you’ll find walls and floors crafted from materials sourced across Europe and California. The three fireplaces are uniquely faced with gold-bearing rocks from three active mines visible from the hotel’s windows.

Completed in the fall of 1934, the heritage country inn celebrated its grand opening with a lavish party on November 13. This special occasion marked the first time the town’s electric power supply was turned on! The hotel’s pub, the first beer parlour in Wells, quickly became a favourite among mine workers, especially on paydays.
